My boys love to build houses and create imaginary new worlds! They fight zombies and gear up to beat the Enderdragon! They protect villagers, raise farm animals, mine for materials, and build elaborate castles with secret tunnels! Minecraft is a great tool to promote creativity! It teaches creative thinking, teamwork, geometry, geology, physics and some survival skills! We have had the opportunity to go to the local museum and see in person the various mined materials like obsidian, sandstone, coal, limestone, diamond, gold, iron and redstone! Plus the use of the remote promotes fine motor skill development. The best part is if you don’t want them playing on the mode with zombies and other “scary” things you can switch it to creative mode where everything is friendly and they can’t die! They can design and build to their heart’s content! My youngest son was asking me to “print Minecraft coloring pages”, but when I went in search of it I had a hard time finding one that allowed for the most creativity so I made my own! I hope that you enjoy it as much as my kids do! Get out the crayons, markers, pens, paint and whatever other media you can find and let the creativity flow! Since we home school we like to use this printable for art. I even have it folded up in my purse for on-the-go creativity when I have errands to run! RV must haves: Our top 5! https://thatsavagelife.com/rv-must-haves-top-5/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rv-must-haves-top-5 https://thatsavagelife.com/rv-must-haves-top-5/#comments Thu, 13 Feb 2014 15:29:22 +0000 http://happilyuprooted.com/?p=1670 [wp_ad_camp_2] RV must haves: Our top five must have items for RV living and travel to make life on the road easier! We have been living in an RV for over 5 years now and there are a few things that we use the most and love that we want to share with our readers! Since we follow the work we are not always in sunny Florida and have had a lot of experience with freezing temperatures and other weather related difficulties we gathered our top 5 items that make living  400 square feet easier!! These are our top 5 best purchases for the RV: 1. Pirit 25-Feet Heated Hose The Pirit hose has been one of the best investments we have made! We have been unfortunate enough to be in freezing temperatures every winter since we follow the work. When everyone else around us has to unhook their water hose and only use the water in their fresh water tanks, we have free-flowing, unfrozen water all the time! The has been tested to 9 degrees already and it works like a champ!  2. Ninja 3 in 1 Cooking System I got the Ninja Cooking System a few years ago for Mother’s Day and it is one of my MOST USED kitchen appliances! This thing is awesome! It is a crock pot, steamer and oven that can also brown meat, sauté veggies, roast and slow cook! We have cooked chili in it from start to finish by browning the meat and onions, adding everything and switching it over to slow cook mode! There is only one pot to clean up, so if you live in an RV and are short on kitchen space this is the appliance for you! 3. Tri-Lynx Lynx Levellers, (Pack of 10)   You can never have too many Linx Levellers when you live in an RV and travel as much as we do! You never know what kind of site you will end up with when the options are slim! These have helped us in numerous un-level situations! We also use them under our steps to support the bottom step!   4. Dyson DC44 Animal Digital Slim Vacuum   This vacuum sucks! No really! It does! It sucks the dog hair, dirt and kid mess right out of the carpet! This is our choice because it is slim and easy to store and the main part detaches to be used as a handheld vacuum which is great for cleaning cars after long trips! 5. Makita 12V max Lithium-Ion Cordless 2-Piece Combo Kit Compact but powerful! I have used these to change tires, replace an inverter, remove an awning, install an air conditioner, fix a thermostat… the list just goes on an on. I have personally owned my set for over 4 years and they just won’t quit. The small nature of the drill set means that you can also fit them into almost any storage area in your RV. [wp_ad_camp_3]

Winter Storm Atlas: Cheyenne, Wyoming https://thatsavagelife.com/winter-storm-atlas-cheyenne-wyoming/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=winter-storm-atlas-cheyenne-wyoming https://thatsavagelife.com/winter-storm-atlas-cheyenne-wyoming/#comments Mon, 07 Oct 2013 00:45:56 +0000 http://happilyuprooted.com/?p=1484 [wp_ad_camp_2] Winter Storm Atlas was forecasted to bring us lots of snow here in Cheyenne! We spent the days before playing in the sun, getting the RV ready for the freezing temperatures and preparing for the snow! Fortunately it wasn’t as bad as it was forecast, but these Texans still got to have a little snowy fun! The night before the boys set bowls out to catch fresh snow so that we could make some snow-treats! First, we made snow-cream! There are a lot of different recipes for this, but I used what I had on hand! Ingredients: Fresh SNOW, Sweetened condensed milk and Maple Syrup! The boys added some “sprinkles” we had in the pantry! Next, we tried our hand at snow candy! This ended up being a caramel-like candy! It was pure deliciousness! Ingredients: 1/8 cup molasses, 1/4 cup maple syrup, 1/8 cup butter and about 1/2 cup powdered sugar. Boil while stirring until it thickens and pour strips and piles onto fresh snow. There are lots of recipes, but this really is close to a caramel! [wp_ad_camp_3]

Top 10 Ways to Save Money While Traveling https://thatsavagelife.com/top-10-ways-to-save-money-while-traveling/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=top-10-ways-to-save-money-while-traveling https://thatsavagelife.com/top-10-ways-to-save-money-while-traveling/#comments Mon, 09 Sep 2013 05:59:03 +0000 http://happilyuprooted.com/?p=1397 [wp_ad_camp_2] We spend anywhere from three to seven days in TRAVEL MODE on the road hitting the pavement to our next destination! This can sometimes be taxing on the wallet if we are not careful. We do our best to save money while traveling and this is how! Most of these suggestions are geared toward RV travel, but A few of these can even apply to road trips, boat trips and plane trips!! Do YOU have some money-saving travel tips? I would love to hear them! Leave me a comment! 1) Snacks: Always bring our own snacks! We pack snack baggies with vegetables, fruit, crackers and other easy, healthy snack foods. 2) Meals: Make lunch ahead of time! Before we pack the RV up and move it I always make lunches and dinners that don’t require electricity to heat or that can be eaten cold! This helps because by time you get hungry you just want something easy and FAST to eat… which often leads to eating at a restaurant! Our Summer Pasta Salad is GREAT for this! 3) Sleep: If the weather is nice. If it isn’t too hot or too cold you can look for FREE or cheap overnight parking! Our personal favorite is Wal-Mart parking lot, but the list is endless! All you have to do is call ahead and ask the manager! We have had great luck with Home Depot parking lots as well! When you are in the western part of the country BLM land is available to use! If for some reason the weather is not suitable for boondocking then look for local cities that offer CHEAP overnight RV sites with full hook-ups! We have seen these sites in Nebraska, Kansas, and Armor, South Dakota. They are usually fairgrounds or city parks. Boondockers Welcome is a great site for boondocking! 4) Fuel: We use apps such as GasBuddy to show us the cheapest gas and diesel in the area! Three cents doesn’t sound like much, but when you put thousands of miles in over a year it adds up quickly! Check out this ProTip! If you’re below half a tank, and you’re getting close to a state line, use GasBuddy to see what the prices are like on both sides of the state line. Because of state taxes, one will usually be a much better deal. 5) Entertainment: While traveling from one destination to the next we look for free entertainment in the cities we are passing through! This could be a museum, train depot, or live music. The possibilities are endless! Check local Chamber of Commerce websites and city websites to see what is going on! Another useful app is Trip Advisor and Yelp! 6) Entertainment: We rent Redbox movies in one town and drop them off in another town along the trip! The boys watch movies while we are traveling and love to add new movies! Bonus: I don’t have to hear it or see the same movie 5 million times in a row! If you are thrifty you can often find codes online for free rentals, especially if you have the RedBox app. 7) Toys: We often rotate toys out before a road trip. We buy them second-hand or at a garage sale and then donate them when the kids tire of them. This cuts costs AND clutter and the kids feel like it is Christmas every time we get new toys! 8) Fuel: Maintain your speed to conserve fuel! Studies show that the faster and more erratic you drive the more fuel you burn! Fuel isn’t cheap so keep your foot off the pedal and use cruise control when possible! 9) Maintenance: Always check your tires, tire pressure, oil, and DEF if you have it before hitting the road! These simple things can save you from having to pay a tow truck driver and from having costly repairs on the road! 10) Season: If at all possible travel in off-peak season! For us this is impossible because we follow the work, but for others who are location independent this could save a ton of money! BONUS: local attractions will be less crowded! **How do YOU like to save money while traveling whether it be in an RV, boat, plane or car?? ** [wp_ad_camp_3]

Bountiful Baskets https://thatsavagelife.com/bountiful-baskets/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bountiful-baskets https://thatsavagelife.com/bountiful-baskets/#comments Sun, 20 Jan 2013 09:42:06 +0000 http://happilyuprooted.com/?p=733 [wp_ad_camp_2] Have you heard of Bountiful Baskets? Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op (BBFC) “offers a conventional produce basket every other week (or weekly) which is generally ½ fruit and ½ veggies. The monetary contribution is $15.00 and is generally worth $50.00 retail. Organic baskets require a contribution of $25. To participate visit http://www.BountifulBaskets.org and check the schedule to see when your state is available to make your monetary contribution using a debit or credit card. Then, pick up your basket on Saturday morning at the time and place you chose when you contributed!” The process is very simple and so rewarding! I get excited to go pick up my basket or baskets on Saturday mornings… it’s a surprise every week since you never know what is in the baskets! This week I decided to purchase one conventional basket and one organic basket to see if I could get a variety of produce and to be able to price compare them. I am happy with both of them and the boys can’t wait to dig in!! This week I will be comparing my contribution to Bountiful Baskets to the retail cost of produce at the grocery store and will report back with my findings! [wp_ad_camp_3]

The conventional basket ($15.00)
The organic basket ($25.00)
The organic basket ($25.00)

I get excited to go pick up my basket or baskets on Saturday mornings… it’s a surprise every week since you never know what is in the baskets! This week I decided to purchase one conventional basket and one organic basket to see if I could get a variety of produce and to be able to price compare them. I am happy with both of them and the boys can’t wait to dig in!!

This week I will be comparing my contribution to Bountiful Baskets to the retail cost of produce at the grocery store and will report back with my findings!

I made it for my husband’s coworkers and it didn’t last long. The best chili recipe for the crockpot Ingredients: 1.5 pounds ground beef chuck (not lean) 1 pound  HOT breakfast sausage 1 pound  regular breakfast sausage 2 ( 15 ounces) cans mild chili beans with juice 2 (15 ounces) cans dark red kidney beans with juice 2 cans (28 ounces) diced tomatoes with juice 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste 1 large yellow onion, chopped 3 stalks celery, chopped 1 green bell pepper, chopped and seeded 1 red bell pepper, chopped and seeded 2 small cans mild green chilies 2 tablespoon Beef Better than bouillon 3 strips bacon fried crispy and chopped 1/2 cup DARK beer 2 tsp Special Dark Cocoa powder 1/4 cup chili powder 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons minced garlic 1 tablespoon dried oregano 2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce (tabasco) 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (More to taste) 1 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon chipotle chili powder1 teaspoon white sugar   Instructions: In a large stock pan cook bacon until crispy. Take out and set aside. Cook celery, peppers, onion, chili peppers, garlic until tender using the bacon grease. + Add beef and sausage. Cook until done. Drain off grease. Move to a large crockpot. I use a crockpot liner for easy clean up! +Add diced tomatoes with liquid, tomato paste, chili beans with sauce, kidney beans with sauce. + Add chopped bacon pieces, bouillon, and beer. Season with chili powder (both), Worcestershire sauce, oregano, cumin, hot pepper sauce, basil, salt, pepper, cayenne, papri ka, cocoa, and sugar. Stir and allow to cook in a crockpot for about 2 hours. Test. This would be a good time to add more cayenne, salt or pepper if you desire. Allow to cook the full 8 hours. **(Don’t be nervous about the cocoa powder. A friend at Counting zzzz’s  told me about it. It adds a dark color to your chili and it gives it a wonderful smokey flavor!!!) This chili is best when it is cooked for 8 hours, cooled for the day or night, then ladle off any standing grease while the chili is cold and then allow it to cook in the crockpot for another 6-8 hours on low. This makes for a nice thick, melded chili. Serve with crackers, tortilla chips, Fritos and cheese… or anything that you like to add!   Come back and tell me what you think! [wp_ad_camp_3]
