My boys love to build houses and create imaginary new worlds! They fight zombies and gear up to beat the Enderdragon! They protect villagers, raise farm animals, mine for materials, and build elaborate castles with secret tunnels! Minecraft is a great tool to promote creativity! It teaches creative thinking, teamwork, geometry, geology, physics and some survival skills! We have had the opportunity to go to the local museum and see in person the various mined materials like obsidian, sandstone, coal, limestone, diamond, gold, iron and redstone! Plus the use of the remote promotes fine motor skill development. The best part is if you don’t want them playing on the mode with zombies and other “scary” things you can switch it to creative mode where everything is friendly and they can’t die! They can design and build to their heart’s content! My youngest son was asking me to “print Minecraft coloring pages”, but when I went in search of it I had a hard time finding one that allowed for the most creativity so I made my own! I hope that you enjoy it as much as my kids do! Get out the crayons, markers, pens, paint and whatever other media you can find and let the creativity flow! Since we home school we like to use this printable for art. I even have it folded up in my purse for on-the-go creativity when I have errands to run! Easy Sun Catcher Craft! http://thatsavagelife.com/easy-sun-catcher-craft/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=easy-sun-catcher-craft http://thatsavagelife.com/easy-sun-catcher-craft/#comments Thu, 01 Aug 2013 19:13:28 +0000 http://happilyuprooted.com/?p=1084 Make your own Easy Sun Catcher Craft! This is a fun and easy craft for all ages! I even enjoyed making my own sun catcher with the kids! It is super, super easy!! You’ll need translucent cheap beads (kids craft beads $1.97 at Wal-Mart) and a tin foil pan. Make sure your pan is cheap like the ones from dollar tree so that it doesn’t have a brand name imprinted on it. Just a smooth bottom. Line the bottom of the pan as you wish with any design using the beads! We made star shapes, bluebonnets, and random. The random one actually turned out the best! Make sure there are plenty of beads touching. If there are holes or gaps they will not melt correctly and it will leave holes in your final project!  It is ok if they are on top of each other. Place in oven at 400 degrees until melted and glassy. Take out and immediately punch hole with a straw or something (we used a chopstick) as these dry and cool super fast! Let sit for a few minutes and pop out of pan! If there are holes after it is cooked place extra beads in or on the hole and back in the oven! Repeat the process again until you have all the holes filled! Ta Da! Super easy! Be sure to hang where the sun will hit it! These are super durable and the kids love having them in their windows! Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Museum of Art http://thatsavagelife.com/cheekwood-botanical-gardens-and-museum-of-art/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=cheekwood-botanical-gardens-and-museum-of-art http://thatsavagelife.com/cheekwood-botanical-gardens-and-museum-of-art/#respond Mon, 13 Aug 2012 22:34:49 +0000 http://happilyuprooted.wordpress.com/?p=496 Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Museum of Art On August 11, 2012 we visited Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Museum of Art for our home school field trip day. It was a nice, sunny day and the high temp was below 89 degrees. Just beautiful and breezy! We originally decided to check this place out because I found a website online that said it was free. However, when we got there it was not free. After touring Cheekwood we were thankful that we paid!! We absolutely loved it! Cheekwood is a botanical garden. Not just ANY botanical garden, but 55 acres of several beautiful, themed botanical gardens that opened to the public in 1960! Visitors will be delighted to see a Japanese garden, a color garden, an herb garden, two perennial gardens, water garden, seasons garden and an award-winning wildflower garden. As you meander through the different gardens it is like entering a different part of the world. Our favorite was the bamboo forest with beautiful Japanese stones statues and towering bamboo. The zen garden which is made up of raked pebbles and strategically placed granite boulders and plant life was pretty calming too! Botanic Hall, the center of the horticultural activities, had a bonsai exhibit while we were there. I am told these change often! This particular time we visited we were able enjoy the exhibit titled: “Treehouses: Great works of literature!” This exhibit was bar far one of the coolest exhibits we have visited with children. As you walk through the botanical gardens along the paths there are artisan built tree houses that correspond with great children’s literature throughout history. Treehouse representations include tree houses fashioned from the books “The Giver,” “Rainbow Fish,” “Peter Pan,” “The Hobbit,” “Lord of the Flies,” and “Haroun and the Sea of Stories”.  While each whimsical treehouse was so much fun and a delight for both children and adults I have to say my all time favorite tree house was the “Rainbow Fish” which used recycled cd’s and dvd’s as the scales and the sunshine sparkled off of it!   The kids even found an inch worm that they played with for a while before releasing it onto a tree. If you are in the area of Nashville, TN this is a must visit! The kids will be talking about it for a long time!   ADMISSION PRICES: $12 – Adults $10 –  Seniors (65 +) $5 – College Students w/ ID $5 – Youth (3 – 17) Free – 2 and Under 50% MILITARY DISCOUNT for military personnel. Must show current military ID. Parking is 3.00 VISITING HOURS: Tuesday – Saturday 9:30 am – 4:30 pm Sunday 11:00 am – 4:30 pm CLOSED MONDAY, except for Memorial Day and Labor Day CLOSED Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day
