High Country inn is on a mountain top with green grass and is heavily treed. When we arrived we got a full tour by Vicki and were told that we could pick and eat any of the fruits that grew on the property. Lucky us, the cherry tree was ready to be harvested! Vicki told us that berries would be ready soon and we could see they were in full bloom! It is quiet with the exception of the birds chirping and the humming birds flapping and buzzing by. Through the bushes on the back deck there was a view of the water below. I was fascinated with the hummingbirds! There is a feeder on the back deck and the hummingbirds swarm it! There were at least 10 hummingbirds chirping and buzzing by and they let you get within a foot of the feeder for an up-close view of these tiny birds. It was really entertaining to be so up-close and personal with a creature that rarely let’s you be anywhere near them. I could actually feel the flapping of their wings. We saw several with green feathers (Anna’s Hummingbird) and one Ruby Throated Hummingbird who was probably a male because he was very aggressive towards the others.   A few humming-bird facts: – Hummingbirds flap their wings 60-200 times per second. – Hummingbirds actually have a tongue that they use to lap up nectar at a rate of 13 times per second. – They consume half of their body weight in sugar daily. – They can fly up to 60 miles per hour. – Hummingbirds are the smallest bird in the world. – They can flash their bright colors or hide them when they need to. – Their feathers are iridescent like a sheen on a bubble. – A baby hummingbird is smaller than a penny.   [wp_ad_camp_2]   Vicki hand prepared our dinner and breakfast. We greatly enjoyed both and were happy with the quality of the food. Wine and beer were available for purchase by the glass or bottle. We were given the options to choose what we wanted to eat and what time we wanted to eat since we were the only people there. We even got served some fresh-from-the-tree country, canned peaches. Vicki was kind enough to put out some fine cheeses and crackers as a before dinner snack since we had been traveling all day.   Hospitality: Vicki, the host, went out of her way to make our stay special. She knew it was our 10 year anniversary and did everything she could to be accommodating and to make our night memorable. Bingo the schnauzer puppy was happy to welcome us and wanted to play ball. Vicki was entertaining and a blast to chat with! We did not get to meet the owner, Jo, but we were told a lot about her during our stay.   Accommodations: The beds were comfortable, the inn and all publicly accessible places on the property were clean, quiet and well maintained. Each room/cabin is theme decorated. We stayed in the moose room which had a very mountain lodge feel complete with a real, mounted mountain lion in our room. There was quite a bit to do at High Country Inn Bed & Breakfast for adults and children. There was a pool table, games, toys, satellite TV, music, comfortable couches and patio furniture, and a sparkling hot tub in the gardens. They are also pet friendly. [wp_ad_camp_2] Overall our stay was relaxing and it was so nice to wake up feeling refreshed and taken care of! We would hope to stay here again sometime with the kids!

RV must haves: Our top 5! http://thatsavagelife.com/rv-must-haves-top-5/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rv-must-haves-top-5 http://thatsavagelife.com/rv-must-haves-top-5/#comments Thu, 13 Feb 2014 15:29:22 +0000 http://happilyuprooted.com/?p=1670 [wp_ad_camp_2] RV must haves: Our top five must have items for RV living and travel to make life on the road easier! We have been living in an RV for over 5 years now and there are a few things that we use the most and love that we want to share with our readers! Since we follow the work we are not always in sunny Florida and have had a lot of experience with freezing temperatures and other weather related difficulties we gathered our top 5 items that make living  400 square feet easier!! These are our top 5 best purchases for the RV: 1. Pirit 25-Feet Heated Hose The Pirit hose has been one of the best investments we have made! We have been unfortunate enough to be in freezing temperatures every winter since we follow the work. When everyone else around us has to unhook their water hose and only use the water in their fresh water tanks, we have free-flowing, unfrozen water all the time! The has been tested to 9 degrees already and it works like a champ!  2. Ninja 3 in 1 Cooking System I got the Ninja Cooking System a few years ago for Mother’s Day and it is one of my MOST USED kitchen appliances! This thing is awesome! It is a crock pot, steamer and oven that can also brown meat, sauté veggies, roast and slow cook! We have cooked chili in it from start to finish by browning the meat and onions, adding everything and switching it over to slow cook mode! There is only one pot to clean up, so if you live in an RV and are short on kitchen space this is the appliance for you! 3. Tri-Lynx Lynx Levellers, (Pack of 10)   You can never have too many Linx Levellers when you live in an RV and travel as much as we do! You never know what kind of site you will end up with when the options are slim! These have helped us in numerous un-level situations! We also use them under our steps to support the bottom step!   4. Dyson DC44 Animal Digital Slim Vacuum   This vacuum sucks! No really! It does! It sucks the dog hair, dirt and kid mess right out of the carpet! This is our choice because it is slim and easy to store and the main part detaches to be used as a handheld vacuum which is great for cleaning cars after long trips! 5. Makita 12V max Lithium-Ion Cordless 2-Piece Combo Kit Compact but powerful! I have used these to change tires, replace an inverter, remove an awning, install an air conditioner, fix a thermostat… the list just goes on an on. I have personally owned my set for over 4 years and they just won’t quit. The small nature of the drill set means that you can also fit them into almost any storage area in your RV. [wp_ad_camp_3]

RV must haves: Our top five must have items for RV living and travel to make life on the road easier!

These are our top 5 best purchases for the RV:

1. Pirit 25-Feet Heated Hose

The Pirit hose has been one of the best investments we have made!

2. Ninja 3 in 1 Cooking System

I got the Ninja Cooking System a few years ago for Mother’s Day and it is one of my MOST USED kitchen appliances!

3. Tri-Lynx Lynx Levellers, (Pack of 10)

You can never have too many Linx Levellers when you live in an RV and travel as much as we do! You never know what kind of site you will end up with when the options are slim! These have helped us in numerous un-level situations! We also use them under our steps to support the bottom step!

It is mostly free and great exercise! Plus, you get to see beautiful parts of the country that you wouldn’t get to see from traveling the roadway! This last week we traveled to the Talladega National Forest and hiked part of the Pinhoti Trail near Heflin, Alabama. I say part of because the trail itself is part of the Southern Appalachian long distance hiking trail. The trail we hiked was 5 miles of the full 335 mile trail! We began planning our Pinhoti Trail hike online over at www.pinhotitrailalliance.org, where maps, history, and activities can be found.  From Oxford, Alabama we initial traveled to what we thought was an entrance to the trail near the gps coordinates: 33.753866, -85.572786 which turned out to be an to check biology stations. The well marked entrance to the trail that we found with the help of some locals was located near the Coleman Lake Campground (33.786870, -85.565831). We did not stay in the campground, but portions of it were visible from the trail. For those of you with longer recreations vehicles, be aware that it was designed for RVs no more than 35ft in length. Once we located the trail and began our hike,  we discovered that it was well-marked and well-kept! As beginner hikers with kids we found the trail to be an easy and fun outing that took us around 4 hours at a leisurely pace. Altogether, we did 2.5 miles in and turned around and did 2.5 miles out.   Photos From the Pinhoti Trail

The Pinhoti Trail: Pine Glen to Sweetwater Lake is a 5 mile out and back trail located near Heflin, Alabama and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round.

The kids, now 5 and almost 7 years old, really enjoyed this hike! There were hills and valleys, lakes and creeks, tiny foot bridges, plenty of places to sit and enjoy a snack while checking out the scenery.

We did not know what to expect, but let me tell you… this place far surpassed anything we could have imagined! This barn had a THREE STORY jungle-gym complete with slides and foam ball shooters for the kids to completely wear themselves out at… and for some of the parents to take a seat and relax!  Once the sky’s turned dark they lights lit up… the whole “town” was glowing beautifully and it was so festive! Couple that with random carolers and you have some serious Christmas cheer!   Stone Mountain Park Christmas had so much to do and see that there is NO WAY we could have seen everything and done it all in one day! Here is a short list of a few of the things we did get to do:  – Road a train around the park (the boys loved this!)  – Watched a short version of The Polar Express in 4D!! This was beyond cool!! They made it snow in the theatre, our chairs shook, wind blew our hair and the animation popped off the screen! It was just amazing!!!  – Played in a 3 story jungle gym. (kids played… mom wanted to pass out by then) – Watched glass makers make hand-blown glass ornaments!  – Fireworks!  – Watched the Snow Angel fly across the sky and ring the bell to start the Christmas Season!  – Watched a high energy Christmas Parade complete with Santa!  The list of things to do and entertainment to watch goes on and on!! We hope to make it back someday and enjoy the other entertainment offerings!

Turns out they recognized us as full-time travelers! We stopped and talked for a while and the boys got to meet another (soon to be) traveling friend! Best wishes to The Buttram family as their nomadic journey starts soon! 2/19/2014 Update: The Buttram’s began their dream of becoming a full time family! We met up with them later for a trial run with their new RV at the KOA in Oxford, Alabama before they shipped off to winter in Arizona.

Of course the boys had to wear their cloaks made by the very talented Michelle in Cheyenne, Wyoming! They were smart to wear them because it was a little cold!

One of the kids’ favorite things to do is look out the binoculars!

Me and the very bearded Patrick! 🙂

This time we took a different path since so many people were on the board walk. The boys loved finding their way through the woods to get back to the car!

We spent the days before playing in the sun, getting the RV ready for the freezing temperatures and preparing for the snow! Fortunately it wasn’t as bad as it was forecast, but these Texans still got to have a little snowy fun! The night before the boys set bowls out to catch fresh snow so that we could make some snow-treats! First, we made snow-cream! There are a lot of different recipes for this, but I used what I had on hand! Ingredients: Fresh SNOW, Sweetened condensed milk and Maple Syrup! The boys added some “sprinkles” we had in the pantry! Next, we tried our hand at snow candy! This ended up being a caramel-like candy! It was pure deliciousness! Ingredients: 1/8 cup molasses, 1/4 cup maple syrup, 1/8 cup butter and about 1/2 cup powdered sugar. Boil while stirring until it thickens and pour strips and piles onto fresh snow. There are lots of recipes, but this really is close to a caramel! [wp_ad_camp_3]

Top 10 Ways to Save Money While Traveling http://thatsavagelife.com/top-10-ways-to-save-money-while-traveling/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=top-10-ways-to-save-money-while-traveling http://thatsavagelife.com/top-10-ways-to-save-money-while-traveling/#comments Mon, 09 Sep 2013 05:59:03 +0000 http://happilyuprooted.com/?p=1397 [wp_ad_camp_2] We spend anywhere from three to seven days in TRAVEL MODE on the road hitting the pavement to our next destination! This can sometimes be taxing on the wallet if we are not careful. We do our best to save money while traveling and this is how! Most of these suggestions are geared toward RV travel, but A few of these can even apply to road trips, boat trips and plane trips!! Do YOU have some money-saving travel tips? I would love to hear them! Leave me a comment! 1) Snacks: Always bring our own snacks! We pack snack baggies with vegetables, fruit, crackers and other easy, healthy snack foods. 2) Meals: Make lunch ahead of time! Before we pack the RV up and move it I always make lunches and dinners that don’t require electricity to heat or that can be eaten cold! This helps because by time you get hungry you just want something easy and FAST to eat… which often leads to eating at a restaurant! Our Summer Pasta Salad is GREAT for this! 3) Sleep: If the weather is nice. If it isn’t too hot or too cold you can look for FREE or cheap overnight parking! Our personal favorite is Wal-Mart parking lot, but the list is endless! All you have to do is call ahead and ask the manager! We have had great luck with Home Depot parking lots as well! When you are in the western part of the country BLM land is available to use! If for some reason the weather is not suitable for boondocking then look for local cities that offer CHEAP overnight RV sites with full hook-ups! We have seen these sites in Nebraska, Kansas, and Armor, South Dakota. They are usually fairgrounds or city parks. Boondockers Welcome is a great site for boondocking! 4) Fuel: We use apps such as GasBuddy to show us the cheapest gas and diesel in the area! Three cents doesn’t sound like much, but when you put thousands of miles in over a year it adds up quickly! Check out this ProTip! If you’re below half a tank, and you’re getting close to a state line, use GasBuddy to see what the prices are like on both sides of the state line. Because of state taxes, one will usually be a much better deal. 5) Entertainment: While traveling from one destination to the next we look for free entertainment in the cities we are passing through! This could be a museum, train depot, or live music. The possibilities are endless! Check local Chamber of Commerce websites and city websites to see what is going on! Another useful app is Trip Advisor and Yelp! 6) Entertainment: We rent Redbox movies in one town and drop them off in another town along the trip! The boys watch movies while we are traveling and love to add new movies! Bonus: I don’t have to hear it or see the same movie 5 million times in a row! If you are thrifty you can often find codes online for free rentals, especially if you have the RedBox app. 7) Toys: We often rotate toys out before a road trip. We buy them second-hand or at a garage sale and then donate them when the kids tire of them. This cuts costs AND clutter and the kids feel like it is Christmas every time we get new toys! 8) Fuel: Maintain your speed to conserve fuel! Studies show that the faster and more erratic you drive the more fuel you burn! Fuel isn’t cheap so keep your foot off the pedal and use cruise control when possible! 9) Maintenance: Always check your tires, tire pressure, oil, and DEF if you have it before hitting the road! These simple things can save you from having to pay a tow truck driver and from having costly repairs on the road! 10) Season: If at all possible travel in off-peak season! For us this is impossible because we follow the work, but for others who are location independent this could save a ton of money! BONUS: local attractions will be less crowded! **How do YOU like to save money while traveling whether it be in an RV, boat, plane or car?? ** [wp_ad_camp_3]

Bonus: I don’t have to hear it or see the same movie 5 million times in a row! If you are thrifty you can often find codes online for free rentals, especially if you have the RedBox app.

9) Maintenance: Always check your tires, tire pressure, oil, and DEF if you have it before hitting the road! These simple things can save you from having to pay a tow truck driver and from having costly repairs on the road!
